Hearing Your Voice Twice in Logic Pro? Check These Settings

If you hear your voice twice while recording in Logic Pro, check whether both your audio interface and Logic are monitoring the same microphone. One path can reach your headphones before the other, creating an echo or an odd, phasey sound. This is a routing issue to check before blaming your vocal preset.

Why two monitoring paths can sound like an echo

Direct monitoring lets you hear the input through your interface. Software monitoring sends it through Logic before you hear it. If both are active, you can hear the direct signal plus a delayed version.

Focusrite documents this exact double-monitoring problem for its Scarlett, Clarett and Saffire interfaces. Other setups need their own routing check, so treat this as a possible cause, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Choose one path for your live vocal

Want to hear the direct mic signal? Keep your interface's direct monitoring on and turn off Logic's Software Monitoring in the General Audio settings. Apple describes this as an option when your interface supports hardware monitoring.

Want to hear your Logic vocal effects? Turn off the direct mic feed in your interface's monitoring controls and use Logic's software monitoring. Apple confirms that software monitoring includes the channel-strip plugins you hear while recording.

The interface control might be a hardware switch or part of its mixer software. Check your model's manual rather than copying settings from a different interface.

Does turning off direct monitoring stop recording?

On the Focusrite interfaces covered by its direct-monitoring guide, the input still goes to the recording software. Direct monitoring changes what you hear, not whether the input is sent to your DAW.

My advice: record a short test, stop, and listen back before committing to a full verse. If the take sounds normal but the live headphone sound does not, keep investigating the monitoring setup.

What if the voice is still delayed?

A single delayed voice is different from hearing two copies. Logic's software monitoring has latency, and Apple notes that lowering the I/O buffer size can reduce it. Change one setting at a time and test your setup.

If the sound is still doubled, check whether another track is monitoring the same mic input. Temporarily bypass delay effects too, so you can distinguish an intentional echo from a routing problem.

Fix the monitoring, then shape the sound

A preset will not remove an extra monitoring path. Once you can hear your take clearly, use a chain as a starting point and adjust it to your recording. For the difference between hearing effects and saving them into a take, read whether to record with a vocal preset on or add it later.

The Logic Pro version of our Frenna-inspired vocal preset bundle uses built-in Logic plugins and includes an installation guide. Select Logic on the product page and fine-tune the chain for your voice and beat.

Frenna is a Dutch artist. This is an independent style-inspired preset, not his actual vocal chain or an official artist product.
