How to Remove Room Echo from Rap Vocals at Home
5 min read · Beginner Guide
Room echo is the #1 problem with home rap recordings. It makes your vocal sound unprofessional, distant, and impossible to mix properly. Here's how to eliminate it — before and after recording.
You can't fix a bad room with plugins. Treat the room first, then let the preset do the rest.

The best way to remove room echo is to prevent it from getting into the recording in the first place.
- Record in a small room with lots of soft furnishings
- Hang thick blankets or moving blankets on the walls behind you
- A wardrobe full of clothes is one of the best DIY vocal booths
- Stay away from corners — they amplify low-frequency reflections
2 Mic Technique: Get Closer
The closer you are to the mic, the more direct signal you capture relative to the room reflections.
- Record 10–15 cm from the mic (not 30–50 cm)
- Use a pop filter to prevent plosives at close range
- Closer = more direct signal, less room
3 Post-Recording: Use a Gate or Expander
If some room sound got in, a noise gate or expander can reduce it between words and phrases.
- Set the threshold just above the room noise level
- Use an expander for a more natural result than a hard gate
- Attack: fast. Release: medium (100–200ms)
AI De-Reverb Tools
Tools like iZotope RX or Adobe Enhance Speech can remove room reverb from already-recorded vocals. They're not perfect, but they can save a take that would otherwise be unusable.
4 Add Controlled Reverb with a Preset
Once your vocal is clean and dry, add reverb intentionally using your vocal preset. This gives you control over the space — instead of the room deciding for you.
- Load your vocal preset — it includes a controlled reverb setting
- The reverb is tuned for rap vocals specifically
- You control the amount — the room no longer does
A clean, dry recording + a quality vocal preset = professional sound. The preset adds the right amount of space and depth — on your terms.
