FL Studio for Free: How the Trial Works (and Its Limits)
Share
Can you use FL Studio for free? Yes, and legally. Image-Line, the company behind FL Studio, offers a free trial that never expires. You get every feature and plugin, you can make complete beats and export them to WAV or MP3. There's one big catch: once you've saved a project, you can't open it again until you buy an edition. This guide covers exactly what works and what doesn't, and how to work smart within that limit.
What's included in the free FL Studio trial?
According to Image-Line's download page, the trial works the same as the All Plugins Edition, the most complete version. That means:
- No time limit. Use the trial for as long as you like.
- Every instrument, effect and feature, on Windows and Mac.
- No watermark on your audio.
- Exporting works to all common formats, like WAV, MP3 and FLAC.
- Saving works too, just not reopening.
The catch: saved projects won't reopen
Image-Line is clear about it: in trial mode, FL Studio won't reopen project files (.flp). You can save, but as soon as you close FL Studio or start a new project, that project is locked until you buy an edition. The file stays safely on your computer. If you buy an edition later, Image-Line's support page says your saved trial projects open normally again.
Keep an eye on which plugins you use, though. The trial includes everything, but if you buy a smaller edition, plugins that aren't part of it stay in trial mode in your project.
How to work smart with the FL Studio trial
You can make solid beats with the trial if you adjust your workflow. Here's how:
- Finish a beat in one session. Plan your time so you complete an idea before you close FL Studio. An eight-bar loop in an hour is already a good start.
- Prep outside FL Studio. Pick your samples beforehand and check the tempo and key of a sample or reference track with the free Beat Lab. Need chords? The chord progression generator gives you a MIDI file you can drag straight into your Piano roll.
- Export before you close. Image-Line says you can render to MP3, WAV or FLAC at any time in the trial, as long as your project is still open. So always export your beat, and separate tracks where it helps. Here's how: how to export a beat in FL Studio.
- Keep building with audio. Want to come back to an idea? Import your export or your separate tracks into a new project and build on top. It's not as flexible as your original project, but your work isn't lost.
- Save anyway. Even if you can't open them now, keep your .flp files. If you buy an edition later, you'll get all your projects back.
Checklist: before you close FL Studio
- Beat exported as WAV or MP3
- Separate tracks exported, if you want to keep building later
- Project saved anyway as an .flp file
- Tempo and key written down, so a new project starts in the right place
Working with someone who owns FL Studio
Image-Line describes another useful route. Send your project to someone with a paid edition. They open it, save it and send it back. According to Image-Line's explanation, you can then reopen that project in the trial, as long as it only uses plugins you're allowed to use. Sharing a license is not allowed.
Recording vocals in the FL Studio trial
Because the trial includes everything, you can record your voice in it too. Record your verse, comp your best take and then export your vocal and your beat separately or together. Here's how to record: how to record rap vocals in FL Studio.
Mixing your vocal too? Grab the free vocal chain cheat sheet. It shows the plugin order for FL Studio and Logic Pro, plus what to do when something sounds off.
Which FL Studio edition will you need later?
Enjoying it and want to reopen your projects? Image-Line has four editions. In short, based on the FL Studio manual:
- Fruity Edition: the entry-level version. Meant for people who don't need audio recording and use few audio clips. If you want to rap or sing in FL Studio, this isn't your edition.
- Producer Edition: adds audio recording, the full Playlist, Edison and more. For most rappers and producers, the logical place to start.
- Signature Bundle: Producer Edition plus a set of extra premium plugins.
- All Plugins Edition: everything, just like the trial.
A nice bonus: according to Image-Line, FL Studio comes with lifetime free updates for the edition you buy. Some new plugins do go to specific editions only.
Using vocal presets? Check which plugins they need. Our FL Studio version of the Frenna Type preset, for example, runs on stock plugins from FL Studio Signature. The difference is explained in FL Studio Producer vs Signature.
Watch out for "FL Studio free download" sites
Search for FL Studio free and you'll also find sites promising a "full version" or a crack. Skip them. You'd be running unlicensed software and you never know exactly what you're installing. The real trial comes straight from Image-Line, and it's already free.
Prefer a different free program?
Want to keep your projects without buying anything? There are free options, like GarageBand on Apple devices and BandLab in your browser or on your phone. See the overview in which DAW to pick as a beginner.
Still choosing between programs? You can try the other big DAWs for free too, but their trials work differently from FL Studio's. See how Logic Pro for free works on your Mac, and how to use Ableton Live for free with the trial or Live Lite.
Beat done, now your vocal
Working in FL Studio? The Frenna Type Vocal Preset Bundle has a version built on stock plugins from FL Studio Signature, plus an installation guide. Frenna is a Dutch artist known for melodic rap with tuned, polished vocals, so think of a similar mix style, in the same lane as the melodic rap records of artists like Drake. It's a starting point that you tune to your own voice and recording, not a copy of any artist's sound and not an official artist product.
