What Does BPM Mean in a Beat? Pick a Tempo for Your Flow
Share
You see 90 BPM or 160 BPM on a beat. What does that tell you as a rapper or singer? BPM means beats per minute: the number of counts of the steady pulse per minute. According to Ableton's explanation of tempo, it's the speed of that pulse.
The number isn't the whole feel
A beat can feel laid back because of the drums while the BPM is high. That's why you can't go by one number to decide whether an instrumental suits you. Listen to the kick and snare, tap along and try a few lines. Do you have enough room to say your words, or do you have to force your flow?
Find the BPM of your beat yourself
Tempo not on your file? Use Beat Lab to estimate the BPM and key of your beat. Pick your audio, check the result and listen along with the click track. Your file stays on your device.
Seeing 70 BPM while you count 140? That can be a half-time or double-time count, not a different speed. The rap/trap view in Beat Lab can show a low estimate doubled. You can turn that view off and check the count yourself. Just changing the BPM label doesn't make your audio faster.
No file at hand? Tap the tempo with the tap tempo and metronome. Which tempo suits which style is in BPM by genre. More ways to find the tempo are in how to find the BPM of a song.
How to test a beat without guessing
- Listen to a verse and a hook first, not just the intro.
- Rap or sing a short test over the beat.
- Pay attention to breathing room, stresses and the transition into the hook.
Want to compare beats? Open the beat collection and try a few instrumentals with different rhythms. You don't need to find the "right" BPM on paper. You're looking for the tempo where your idea works.
