How to Build Your First Rap Vocal Chain from Scratch

7 min read · Beginner Guide

Building a vocal chain from scratch is one of the most valuable skills a rapper can learn. Once you understand the signal flow and what each plugin does, you can create any vocal sound you want. This guide walks you through it step by step.

A vocal chain is just a series of decisions about how to shape your sound. Learn the order, learn the tools, and you'll never struggle with your vocal again.

1 Step 1: High Pass EQ (Clean the Signal)

Always start by removing what you don't need. A high-pass filter cuts the low-frequency rumble that makes vocals sound muddy.

  • Set a High Pass Filter at 80–100 Hz
  • Also cut any resonances between 200–400 Hz
  • No boosts yet — just cleaning

2 Step 2: Compressor (Control the Dynamics)

After EQ, add compression to even out the volume of your vocal. This is what makes it sit consistently in the mix.

  • Ratio: 4:1
  • Attack: 10–20ms
  • Release: 60–100ms
  • Aim for 4–8 dB of gain reduction
  • Add make-up gain to restore the output level

3 Step 3: Pitch Correction (Tune It)

After compression, add pitch correction. Compressing first gives the pitch correction a more stable signal to work with.

  • Set the correct key of your track
  • Use a medium response speed for a natural sound
  • For a more robotic effect, increase the speed

EQ (cut) → Compressor → Pitch Correction → EQ (boost) → Saturation → Send to Reverb + Delay. This is the order used by professional rap producers worldwide.

4 Step 4: Presence EQ (Add Character)

After pitch correction, add a second EQ to boost the frequencies that make your vocal cut through the mix.

  • Boost 3–5 kHz for presence and clarity
  • Boost 10–12 kHz for air and brightness
  • Keep boosts subtle: 2–3 dB per band

5 Step 5: Saturation (Add Warmth)

Saturation adds harmonic richness and warmth. It's the difference between a digital-sounding vocal and one that feels alive.

  • Use tape or tube saturation
  • Keep the drive subtle — warmth, not distortion
  • This is the last plugin in the direct chain

6 Step 6: Reverb and Delay via Send Tracks

Never put reverb or delay directly on your vocal. Use send tracks so you can control the wet/dry balance independently.

  • Create a reverb bus: short room reverb, 0.4–0.8s decay
  • Create a delay bus: 1/8 or 1/4 note delay, low feedback
  • Send your vocal to both buses and adjust the send levels
