How to Layer Rap Vocals Using a Vocal Preset
6 min read · Beginner Guide
Layered vocals are what give professional rap tracks that thick, powerful sound. With a vocal preset, you can achieve this effect quickly and consistently — even as a beginner.
Layering is the secret behind the biggest rap vocals. One lead, one double, one ad-lib — processed with the right preset — and your vocal fills the entire mix.

Start with your main vocal take. This is the one that carries the lyrics and sits front and center in the mix.
- Record 2–3 takes and comp the best one
- Load your vocal preset on this track
- This is your foundation — everything else supports it
2 Record a Double Track
A double is a second recording of the exact same lyrics, performed as closely as possible to the lead.
- Record the same verse again on a new track
- Pan it slightly left or right (10–20%)
- Lower the volume 3–6 dB below the lead
- Load the same preset but reduce the reverb slightly
3 Add Ad-Libs
Ad-libs are short, spontaneous vocal phrases that react to your main lyrics. They add energy and personality.
- Record short reactions: "yeah", "let's go", "uh"
- Pan them wider than the double (left and right)
- Use more reverb on ad-libs than the lead
- Keep them lower in volume than everything else
The Layering Formula
Lead (center, full preset) + Double (slightly panned, −3 to −6 dB) + Ad-libs (wide pan, more reverb, −6 to −10 dB). This is how professional rap vocals are built.
4 Balance the Layers
The lead vocal should always be the loudest and clearest element. Everything else supports it.
- Solo each layer and check it sounds good alone
- Then blend them together and adjust volumes
- The lead should cut through clearly at all times
Using the same vocal preset across all layers keeps your sound cohesive. Just adjust the reverb and volume for each layer — the preset does the heavy lifting.
