The vocal and beat share frequency space — you need to carve out room for the vocal.
- Use sidechain EQ: cut the beat where the vocal is loudest (2-5 kHz)
- Or use dynamic EQ on the vocal to duck competing frequencies
- Cut the vocal's low mids (200-400 Hz) to avoid clashing with the kick and bass
2 Use automation for dynamic presence
A static vocal level rarely sits perfectly throughout a whole track.
- Use volume automation in Logic Pro to ride the vocal level
- Boost the vocal slightly in verses, pull back slightly in choruses if needed
- Automate reverb send levels for more depth in certain sections
3 Control dynamics with compression
Consistent dynamics make it much easier to place the vocal in the mix.
- Use two compressors in series for smooth, natural control
- First compressor: catch peaks (fast attack, 4:1)
- Second compressor: add character (slow attack, 2:1)
