How to Record Rap Vocals in FL Studio Step by Step
6 min read · Beginner Guide
FL Studio is one of the most popular DAWs for rap production — but recording vocals in it works differently than in Logic Pro or Ableton. This step-by-step guide walks you through the entire process.
FL Studio's Mixer is where your rap vocal comes to life. Set it up right and you'll be recording professional-quality takes in minutes.
— nameonthebeat.com1 Set Up Your Audio Interface
Before you open FL Studio, make sure your audio interface is connected and recognized by your computer.
- Connect your interface via USB
- Install the driver if required
- In FL Studio: go to Options → Audio Settings
- Select your interface as the input and output device
2 Open the Mixer and Create a Vocal Track
FL Studio records audio through the Mixer, not the playlist directly. Set up a dedicated Mixer track for your vocals.
- Press F9 to open the Mixer
- Select an empty Mixer track and name it "Vocals"
- Click the track's input selector and choose your mic input
- Enable the record button on that track
3 Add an Edison or Audio Clip to Record
FL Studio uses Edison (a recording plugin) or the Playlist to capture your vocal takes.
- Option A: Add Edison to your vocal Mixer track and record directly
- Option B: In the Playlist, right-click an empty slot and select Record Audio
- Option B is easier for beginners — it records directly to the timeline
Pro Tip: Monitor with Headphones
Always use closed-back headphones when recording in FL Studio. Enable direct monitoring on your audio interface to hear yourself without latency while you rap.
4 Load Your Vocal Preset
After recording, load your vocal preset on the Mixer track to instantly transform your raw vocal.
- Click the first insert slot on your vocal Mixer track
- Load the preset file (.fst) onto the slot
- The full plugin chain loads automatically
- Your vocal is now processed and mix-ready
5 Set Your Gain and Record
Check your levels before you start recording. Aim for peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS on the Mixer meter.
- Rap your loudest line and watch the meter
- Adjust the gain on your audio interface until levels are correct
- Hit record and lay down your verse
Once your vocal is recorded and the preset is loaded, you're done. The preset handles all the processing — EQ, compression, reverb, and saturation — automatically.
