Mono or Stereo Vocals in Logic Pro? What to Choose

If you are recording one vocal with a normal single-channel microphone, choose a mono input in Logic Pro. You can still hear it through both sides of your headphones and add stereo effects later. The recording input and the finished vocal sound are two different things.

Why one microphone usually means mono

Your microphone feeds one input on your audio interface. For that setup, select that individual input rather than a stereo pair. If the mic is connected to Input 1, choose Input 1, not Input 1-2.

Focusrite's mono and stereo guide recommends a mono track for a single mono source. A stereo microphone or a deliberate two-microphone stereo setup is a different case.

How to check the format in Logic Pro

  1. Select your vocal audio track and open its channel strip.
  2. Check the Channel Mode button. One circle means mono; two interlocked circles mean stereo.
  3. Choose the individual input your microphone is connected to.
  4. Record a short test and listen back before doing the whole verse.

Apple explains the Channel Mode button and input selection in its Logic Pro guide. For the rest of the recording workflow, see our guide to recording rap vocals in Logic Pro.

Why can I only hear my vocal in one ear?

One possible cause is selecting a stereo input pair while only one microphone input has a signal. Focusrite documents this exact issue. Check the input format before adding more effects.

A mono vocal is not supposed to be limited to one headphone. With a centered pan position and a normal stereo output, it can play through both sides. If it still does not, check your panning, output routing and headphone connection. Do not assume the preset is the cause.

Can a mono vocal use stereo effects?

Yes. In Logic Pro, a Mono-to-Stereo plugin can take a mono signal and output stereo. Apple's plugin-format guide explains how this changes the signal format from that point in the chain.

That does not mean you should change every effect to stereo. Follow the preset's installation guide and check the signal path. The format should suit the source and the processing, not just look wider on a meter.

Get the input right, then shape the sound

Mono or stereo is a routing choice, not a shortcut to a finished mix. Once your recording plays correctly, a vocal preset can give you a prepared starting point to adjust for your voice and beat.
