How to use the online autotune
- Upload your vocal or record right here. A dry vocal without a beat underneath works best.
- Check the key. The tool finds it for you, but it has to match your beat. Don't know the key of your beat? Check it in Beat Lab.
- Choose how hard. Robot gives you that tight, robotic effect. Natural only smooths out the off-key bits.
- Listen and play with reverb and delay while your vocal plays.
- Happy with it? Download your vocal as a WAV with Pro.
What do the controls do?
- Speed: how fast your voice gets pulled to the right note. At 0 ms it happens instantly. That's when you hear the well-known robot voice and your voice jumps from note to note. Turn it up and more of your slides and vibrato stay intact.
- Strength: how far your voice moves towards the note. At 100% all the way, at 50% halfway.
- Key and scale: the notes your voice is allowed to go to. Chromatic uses all 12 notes. It always sounds tight then, but not necessarily in the key of your beat.
- Reverb and delay: you hear them while listening and they're in your download. They don't change the autotune itself.
The graph shows what happens. Grey is the pitch of your own voice, the blue line is where the autotune pulls you. The lines in the background are the notes of your key.
Why does my autotune sound off-key?
Almost always the key is wrong. Then the autotune pulls your voice to notes that aren't in your beat. Set the key to match your beat. Good to know: A minor and C major use exactly the same notes. The same goes for every minor key and its relative major. Pick either one and it sounds the same. More in how to find the key of a song.
Tips for the best result
- Record with headphones, so your beat doesn't end up in your mic.
- One voice at a time. Doubles or harmonies on top of each other don't work well.
- Don't put reverb on your recording yet. Reverb makes it harder to hear the pitch.
- Rap works too. On Robot your rap gets a melodic edge. Don't want that? Turn the strength down.
- Is your mic quiet or noisy? Check it first with the mic test.
How does it work?
The tool measures many times per second which pitch you're singing and finds the nearest note in your key. Then it shifts your voice to that note, one vibration at a time. Because it doesn't stretch the character of your voice, you still sound like yourself. Breaths and consonants are left alone. Everything happens in your browser. Your vocal is never sent anywhere.
