How to Make a Producer Tag for Your Beats
Share
A producer tag is that short voice or sound with your name at the start of a beat. It makes you recognizable, and in a free preview it keeps people from using your beat without buying it. Here's how to make your own.
What is a producer tag?
A tag is a few seconds of audio with your producer name: a spoken line, a sound effect or both. You put it in your beats, usually in the intro. Listeners hear right away who made the beat.
1. Decide what you want to say
Keep it simple. Your producer name is enough, maybe with a short phrase. The shorter it is, the better it sticks.
2. Record it
You can use your own voice or ask someone else. Do ask for permission if it's not your own voice. Don't use a clip from a famous artist, movie or show. It isn't yours and it can lead to claims, for example on YouTube. Read what a Content ID claim is.
3. Make it recognizable
A bare recording quickly sounds like a voicemail. Play with effects: a bit of reverb or delay, pitching the voice up or down, or a short sound effect underneath. Pick a sound that fits the kind of beats you make.
4. Keep it short
A tag of a few seconds is enough. A long tag gets annoying, especially when someone plays your beat a lot.
5. Put it in the right spot
A lot of producers put their tag in the intro, before the beat really starts. In a free preview you can let it come back now and then, so the beat can't be used without the tag. Make it clear in your license whether the purchased version has a tag or not.
6. Watch the volume
Your tag belongs in the mix, not screaming on top of it. Keep it about as loud as the rest of your intro.
Common mistakes
- Too long. A ten-second tag pulls people out of the beat.
- Too loud. It startles the listener, and they remember it for the wrong reason.
- A voice that isn't yours. Without permission you're taking a risk.
- Too often in the purchased version. An artist doesn't want their song full of tags.

FAQ
What is a producer tag?
A short voice clip or sound with the producer's name, usually in the intro of a beat.
Do I need a tag in my beats?
You don't have to, but it helps you get recognized. In free previews a tag also keeps your beat from being used without a license.
Can I use a voice from the internet for my tag?
Only if you know for sure you're allowed to use it. A clip from an artist, movie or show isn't yours. Better to record something yourself.
