Your First Show or Open Mic: How to Prepare
Share
Your first show or open mic is nerve-wracking. That comes with it. With good preparation you at least have control over the things you can control. Here's how to approach it.
1. Pick two or three songs
At an open mic you usually only get a few minutes. Pick the songs you know best and that land right away. Open with your strongest song, not your slowest.
2. Get your backing track ready
If you rap or sing over a beat, you need a backing track. That's the instrumental, possibly with your hook or ad-libs on it for support. Ask the organizer ahead of time how they want the music: on a USB stick, your phone or a link. Put your tracks in the right order with clear names, and bring a backup.
3. Rehearse the way you'll perform
Rehearse standing up, with the backing track, from start to finish. Not just your verses, but also what you say between songs. Record yourself on your phone and watch it back. You'll hear right away where you run out of breath or rush. For tips, read running out of breath when you rap. Lyrics not sticking yet? Read how to memorize your rap lyrics.
4. Mic technique
- Keep the mic close to your mouth and pointed at it, even when you move.
- Hold the handle, not the head. If you cover the head, your voice sounds muffled and it can start to feed back.
- Don't point the mic at the speakers. That also makes feedback more likely.
5. Use the soundcheck
Getting a soundcheck? Rap or sing at the volume you'll actually perform at, not quieter. Ask if you can hear yourself well in the monitor. Short, clear communication with the sound tech helps more than you'd think.
6. On stage
- Introduce yourself briefly and say the song title.
- Something goes wrong? Just keep going. The crowd notices less than you think.
- Look at the audience, not at the floor.
7. Have someone film it
Ask a friend to film your set. You learn from it, and you instantly have content for your socials. How to use it is in how to promote your song with short videos.
