How to Set Up the Shure SM7dB for Rap Vocals
Share
The Shure SM7dB is the SM7B with a built-in preamp. That means you don't need a Cloudlifter or FetHead anymore to get enough level. Here's how to set it up properly for your rap vocals.
How is it different from the SM7B?
The SM7B is famous, but also notorious for being so quiet. According to Shure, it needs around 60 dB of gain, and not every interface gets there. The SM7dB solves that with a preamp inside the mic itself. According to Shure, it adds up to +28 dB of gain. Also read Shure SM7B too quiet?
1. Connect it and turn on 48V
Connect the SM7dB to your interface with an XLR cable. The built-in preamp needs 48V phantom power. So turn on the 48V button on your interface. That's different from the regular SM7B, which doesn't use phantom power.
2. Pick the preamp setting
On the back there's a switch with three positions:
- +28 dB: the most extra gain. For most rappers at home, the best starting point.
- +18 dB: less extra gain. Handy if you rap loud or if your interface already has plenty of gain.
- Bypass: the preamp is off. According to Shure, it then performs like a regular SM7B.
3. Set the gain on your interface
Start with the gain on your interface low. Rap your loudest part and slowly turn the gain up until you're nicely in the green, with no red. With the preamp on, you usually don't need to turn your interface up as far as with an SM7B. How to do that per interface: Scarlett Solo, Scarlett 2i2, Audient EVO 4 and MOTU M2.
4. Bass roll-off and presence boost
Like the SM7B, the SM7dB has switches on the back to shape the sound:
- Bass roll-off: takes away some low end. Handy if your voice sounds too thick up close.
- Presence boost: lifts the midrange, so your voice comes forward more.
Not sure? Leave them flat. You can always adjust it later in your mix.
5. Rap up close
The SM7dB is a dynamic mic and picks up most of what's right in front of it. Rap up close and stay at the same distance for every take. That way you hear less of your room.
