Bizzey-Style Vocals in FL Studio: Light, Airy and Ready to Party

You can often spot a Bizzey track before the first word, just from that beat with a club edge to it. But what really makes it stick is the vocal. Light, a little lazy and tuned, with a hook you're singing along to after two listens. Sounds simple. It isn't, because a vocal that has to float over a busy party beat drowns fast in a home mix.

Below you'll find what you hear in a Bizzey-style vocal, how to record for a party track, and which mistakes make your hook feel heavy.

Light, airy and just a bit lazy

Bizzey comes from the club side of things and also has a background as a DJ. His tracks lean on beats with reggaeton, dancehall and Latin influences, and on hooks that keep coming back. Put on "Traag" or "Ja!" and focus on the voice. This is what the preset aims for:

  • No heavy low end. The vocal is slim and light, so it doesn't fight the kick and bass.
  • Lots of shine up top. The voice sounds open and festive, like it's hanging above the beat.
  • A tuned melody. The hook sounds smooth and sits nicely on the notes.
  • A relaxed delivery. Nobody's yelling. That calm, almost sleepy way of delivering lines is what makes the repetition so catchy.

Recording for a party track

Party vocals sound easy, but they take discipline. A hook that comes around ten times has to land just as well every time.

  • Keep it cool, not loud. Party doesn't mean shouting. Rap and sing like you're talking at the bar, not like you're trying to be heard over the speakers. The mix will lift you above the beat.
  • Lock into the groove. On beats like these, sloppy timing jumps out right away. Record shorter sections and listen back after every take. Are you dancing with the beat or dragging behind it?
  • Record the full hook a few times. Pick the best one and use it everywhere, or alternate two strong takes. The repetition stays tight without sounding like a copy of a copy.
  • Double the hook. A second take underneath makes it wider and easier to sing along to. That's what the backing vocal preset is for.
  • Use adlibs as an extra layer. The adlibs preset has a phone effect with extra reverb and delay. Short shouts between your lines bring that party feel right away.
  • Quiet recording? No problem. There's an input gain knob at the front of the preset, so you can easily bring up a take that came in too soft.

What happens, without giving away the recipe

Broadly: a firm cleanup down low so the voice gets light, a big lift up top for that festive shine, compression for control, Pitcher for the autotune effect, and space from reverb and delay. All with the stock plugins in FL Studio Signature.

You get two lead presets: one for rap and one for melodic vocals with Pitcher. Set Pitcher to the key of your beat. The free Beat Lab finds it for you in seconds. Our Pitcher guide explains how it works.

The tricky part is knowing how far to go. How much low end can you remove before your voice sounds like a walkie-talkie? How much shine can you add before every S hurts? We found that edge step by step, and that balance is what's in the preset.

Where a party vocal gets heavy

Standing too far from the mic

A light sound already takes low end away. Stand far from the mic on top of that and there's barely any body left, so your voice sounds thin and hollow. Stay at a steady, normal distance.

Hissy S sounds

With lots of shine up top, S, T and SH sounds hit extra hard. On a hook that comes back ten times, that gets annoying fast. Angle your mic slightly away from your mouth or pronounce those sounds a little softer.

Reverb on every word

A party track needs space, just not everywhere. If the lead itself is swimming in reverb, your hook loses its punch and the words get lost in a loud club. Keep the lead fairly dry and let adlibs and backings fill the room.

Pitcher in the wrong key

A party track with an off-key hook kills the vibe instantly. Always check the key before you start polishing anything else.
