Boef-Style Vocals in FL Studio: Bright, Tight and Ready for Autotune

Boef calls what he does street rap, but his biggest hits also went straight to the top of the charts. Fast and confident on the raps, with a voice that always sits bright on top of the beat. Put on "Habiba" and for once ignore the lyrics and listen to the tone: tight, light and up front.

This Type preset for FL Studio is built around exactly that bright, melodic sound, with room for autotuned melodies in your hook. The biggest challenge isn't the chain. It's switching between rapping and singing in one track without sounding like two different artists.

Bright without the sting

  • A clear boost in the upper mids. That's where a voice gets its clarity. Words land right away, even on a phone speaker.
  • Firm compression. The vocal sits tight up front and lines don't fade at the end.
  • Light in color. Not a heavy, dark voice, but a fresh vocal that dances over a full beat.
  • Ready for melody. The melodic lead uses Pitcher for the autotune effect, so sung parts sound smooth and in tune.

Rap and melody in one track

The preset has two leads: one for rap and one for melodic vocals. That's not a luxury. A rap verse and a sung hook need a different approach. Put them on the same lead and either your rap gets too smooth or your hook gets too hard.

  • Record your verses and your hook on separate tracks. That way each part can get its own lead.
  • Make both leads feel like one voice by recording at the same distance with the same mic. Then the switch feels natural.
  • Put your hook doubles on the backing vocal preset. They make the hook wider without crowding your lead.
  • Use the ad-lib preset with the phone effect for short shouts between rap lines. It breaks up the verse and keeps it playful.

Sing with Pitcher on

Autotune sounds best when you're already singing close to the right notes. Pitcher pulls your voice toward the key you set. If you're way off, your voice jumps from note to note and you can hear the effect working hard.

First find the key of your beat with the free Beat Lab and set Pitcher to it. Then record while you already hear yourself through Pitcher in your headphones. You'll hear right away which notes land well, and you'll start aiming better on your own. Never used Pitcher? Our Pitcher guide shows how it works.

Beyond that, the chain goes through familiar steps in broad strokes: cleanup, bringing the tone forward, compression, shine and a little space from separate effects. All with the stock plugins in FL Studio Signature. The difference is how far you can lift the top before it starts to hiss, and how hard you can compress while a melody still breathes. That balance was most of the work, and it's what's saved in the preset.

What ruins a bright vocal

Even more top end on a voice that's already sharp

If you have a thin or high voice, the brightness is already there. Pile extra top end on and your S sounds get painful and everything turns shrill. Leave the top alone and first listen to how the preset sits on your voice.

Hooks you make up in the booth

A melody you invent on the spot comes out unsure. And autotune makes uncertainty audible. Hum your hook over the beat a few times or record a quick demo on your phone before you record for real.

Too many layers under the verse

Bright and tight works best when the rap itself gets the space. Save your doubles for the hook and the key words, and the verse stays sharp.
